Wma lossless to flac converter4/11/2023 I don't know squat about Windows scripting, but the way to fix this problem in *nix (or Cygwin with metaflac.exe in $PATH) for a folder full of the problematic files is: The problem with this is that if you add tags later with, for example, the Winamp plugin, it'll rewrite the whole file out much like when a new ID3V2 tag is added to an MP3, only worse, since FLACs are so much larger. if the only thing dbPowerAmp places in the Vorbis Comments block is the Vendor String, then the VC block ends up AFTER the padding block. This slows down seeking, though not by as much as I expected.Ģ) If the source file has no tag data, i.e. This leads me to point out a couple of problems in dbPowerAmp that I've found while investigating here.ġ) FLAC files created by dbPowerAmp have no seektable. At thirty points for a five minute track, removing seekpoints saves you a mere 544 bytes. Stripping seekpoints doesn't save much A seektable takes four bytes for the block header plus 18 bytes per seekpoint, and flac.exe's default is to add one seekpoint per ~10 seconds of audio. Seekpoints are kept in a metadata block at the start of the file. If indexing info for APE is similar to seekpoints for FLAC, then FLAC (at least, the official flac.exe) doesn't do that. Ooh, reminding me: dunno if FLAC does it, but in its very highest modes MAC strips indexing info.) ![]() Decode time for FLAC is among the fastest, and it doesn't vary much with compression level. High compression will give you about a few hundred kB per file savings over the Medium setting on most 4-5 minute songs, but it's a lot slower.ĭoes anyone have a nice link to CPU tests with FLAC settings? Also I need a storage outlook for the different settings. * - What are some good options when using the offical FLAC encoder? For dbPowerAMP, I just have 3 compression settings (low, med, high). Having lossless files means never having to do this again. Just install the FLAC and WMA support packs for dbPowerAmp and you should be able to just select all your WMA files, right-click -> Convert To, and from there you can convert them all in one fell swoop. ![]() The newest version can put a "Convert To" item in audio files' context menus that launches dbPowerAmp. This is what I use whenever I pull a Monkey's Audio file off of usenet. Use dbPowerAMP to convert from WMA to FLAC. Use (?) WMA decompressor to turn the WMAs into WAVs (I need the decompressor to detect the audio format, 16bit, 44KHz, blah blah blah) and then use the offical FLAC compressor.
